Right Brain Exercises in Futurethink -- Futurethink and Our Careers

1. An interesting research article recently suggested that "Our Brains Shrinking. Are We Getting Dumber?"  Whatever the reason,  greater awareness and brain exercises, stretching our minds to consider the future, may be imperative in future careers.

First, read this article from the NY Times series, "Your Brain on Computers" -- "Attached to Technology and Paying a Mental Price"  -- suggests that our all-day focus on our small screen mobile communication may be affecting relationships, thinking, distracted, unfocused minds.

Thinking Challenge: Are a Society's Values Reflected in Its Technology? Can We Reinvent?

Creative Thinking Will Be Sparked as We Reinvent Societies & Technologies.  Plus: A Right Brain Long-Range Career Exercise -- that could change your life.

Are a Society's Values Reflected in Its Technology?  That is its legacy. And also a clue to the unanticipated vista of new opportunities for new minds. With global challenges, many are looking again at how we are creating our societies - and seeing that it is time for "reinvention" of our technology paradigms as well?  Each reflects our values...  Time for "Stereophonic Braining"...

What Happens When We're Not in Our Right Minds...Yet!

"Begin as if you will finish. Let the story be told that you had the courage to begin." -- Mary Anne Radmacher
We seem to think we're in a creativity-and-innovation crisis because that's what we read.  You'd think we were inventing nothing new.  This depends a lot on where you sit in the Timeline of Human History and whether or not you're from this Planet...

Herstorians/Historians of 4012 might think we had a crisis of a different kind:  TOO MUCH creativity and innovation of non-biodegradable, non-organic, non-repurposeful plastic-electronic, mind-shrinking junk toys for landfills.  Those from another planet visiting might say to us:  "What were you thinking?#!?" as we try to export our New-Model Model of Garbage Landfill Business to the Moon and Mars.

While we might say to ourselves, Yes, Well, it IS too bad that we trashed the planet with trash, but what was I to do?  I have to communicate!  And I can't do it without the new Model 27! I'll be offline.  Out of business!  But those in 4012, they might wish we had shipped our creativity to the Moon instead of our garbage!

But wait: Isn't this then, the greatest opportunity we've had yet?  To look at how to create more "right brain" technology in a new way -- using right brain thinking which is more than creativity; it is long-range thinking, collaborative and cooperative, intuitive and compassionate "big picture thinking," seeing the whole, pattern recognition at higher levels of intelligence.  Perhaps this is a turning-point- time in technology and industrialization.  We've got to come up with something besides a new model that's obsolete in a week.  Let's earn the admiration from citizens 100, 1000, 10,000 years from now - about how we were the ones who transformed a new-model-a-month technology into something new and transformed  "landfill planet" forever!

What if we added “Intuitive Business Intelligence” to a College MBA Curriculum?  Or “Practical Alpha State Mental Exercises for Managers”?  Sounds like intriguing courses – probably already in a curriculum somewhere.  Trendy.  21st Century.

“In 2009 the “Positive Psychology” course at Harvard University was the most oversubscribed course for all first-semester students.”  From "GrossNational Happiness: The Key to a More Inspired Future?" New Paradigm Digest.

But what if we scheduled “Paranormal Training for Managers”?  “Ghost Hunting Skills for Victorian Estate Realtors”?  Not so much.  We’re new thinkers.  Our left brains would start an alarm sequence track to Defcon 1.

Yet in the July 3, 2012 cover article for Psychology Today -- “The 6th Sense”– there is a surprising amount of esoteric, arcane reference in contexts that seem appropriate for decades ago.  Why? The language itself predicts the trivialization or irrelevance of discussing such skills – yet on other fronts from brain science to business training these are showing up regularly!  Especially since Dan Pink’s “A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future” began to open new doorways for global right brain dialogue in business.

7 Principles Applying Right Brain Thinking to Counseling and Understanding Self-Trust

Introduction -- S.H. Rodman

Tom Rodman has spent decades in innovative clinical programming in chemical dependency treatment. Here he provides insight regarding how a right brain approach introduces a different vocabulary for personal change and therapeutic relationships, specifically applying Right Brain Aerobics. The freeing of such right brain skills will likely come as we apply this kind of ability across disciplines daily, viewing ourselves and others differently as we use the brain differently. – S.H.R

7 Principles Applying Right Brain Thinking to Counseling and Understanding Self-Trust

  1. Nothing is irrelevant -- as the individual begins to honor and respect things that “pop up” that don’t follow logical sequences in their concentration.

  2. Right Brain Aerobics is, in itself, an exercise in renewed self-trust.  That which comes up is not the just relevant -- it is your discovery of how it’s relevant that it is important. You must begin to trust what your mind is revealing.

  3. New connections mean organic change.  My suspicion, at least, is that when you exercise these activities that something organically begins to happen in the wiring, so to speak, that is enhanced -- and actual physical change may be taking place.

First:  If you want to see the June Introductory Blog for this series on Right Brain Thinking, see ARCHIVE, lower right column for "The Coming Age of the Right Brain" -- and "It's Not about Left Brain / RIght Brain Labels But Rapid Development of Multidimensional Intelligence"

Right brain thinking emerges from simple, but surprisingly powerful steps. Right brain exercise techniques are most often “stress reduction techniques” as well.  What is surprising is the number of “ah hah” moments – inner genius that suddenly appears when you shift to right brain mode, taking a “time out from the left brain.”  This can mean surprising new ideas – even for tough business and personal problems -- when you start accessing right brain states.  Discovery in non-linear action. So here are 3 simple ways to shift your mental/conscious awareness and life-skills terrain, and you also improve health and happiness. Try this for 3 days and watch what happens…!
